Use foomatic-rip to print direct to printer instead of using pdq. I put my PPD file at ~/.foomatic/direct/BR5150_2.ppd and modified it near the top with:

*FoomaticRIPPostPipe: "| cat > /dev/ulpt0"

(That really is the HTML entity.) And have a ~/.foomatic/direct/.config file containing:

default: BR5150_2

I found a bug in footmatic-rip and I sent a patch to the foomatic developers list but never received response yet (as of 02/Oct/2007).
