Early in the morning after several fixes and many attempts, I was able to build the bootstrap-pkgsrc and start building packages via pkgsrc on a Debian Linux system.
$ uname -a
Linux antelope 2.2.13 #2 Mon Aug 7 12:43:44 PDT 2000 i686 unknown unknown GNU/Linux
$ cat /etc/debian_version
testing/unstable
antelope:~/netbsd $ PKG_DBDIR=/home/jeremy/netbsd/var/db/pkg usr/pkg/sbin/pkg_info
digest-20010807     Message digest wrapper utility
gethost-0.03 hostname and IP resolver for testing /etc/hosts and nsswitch
vim-share-6.1.0 Data files for the vim editor (vi clone)
vim-6.1.0 Vim editor (vi clone) without gui

I sent my many comments and diffs to the tech-pkg list.

On a Compaq Presario 700 laptop running 1.5.3 (i386) with:

uvia0 at pci0 dev 7 function 5: VIA VT82C686A AC'97 Audio (rev 0x50)
auvia0: interrupting at irq 5
auvia0: ADS99 codec; headphone, Analog Devices Phat Stereo
audio0 at auvia0: full duplex, mmap, independent
the audio would keep repeating (played with ogg123 and audioplay).

send-pr: kern/18865: sound repeating with auvia.
