Downloaded NetBSD-1.6/i386 files (using lftp "mirror") and several packages from FTP sites. Since I wanted galeon, I downloaded mozilla separately from a package build site.

I built CD as documented at http://www.netbsd.org/Documentation/bootcd.html#i386image

Later, when using it I noticed that the upgrade partially failed due to missing misc.tgz and man.tgz -- they were symlinks.

The /etc directory has new files. /etc.old had old configs. I used my own update_etc script to update.

To install packages I used "pkg_add -u" on any dependency packages it complained about. I did this manually one at a time. Also, I forgot to download SDL package (needed for mplayer).

The sound in KDE worked automatically when upgrading on this SiS system which didn't have working sound before (but kernel was patched and sound configured but it had buzzed like crazy). The audio still buzzed a little.

Also kernel saw the USB Epson printer. But gimp-print and cups wouldn't print to it. (Or it wouldn't print.)
