I tried using the "if" filter (instead of "of") and my patched lpd worked. I realized that just this certain document seemed to generate the PCL error -- so I used a different postscript page to print. I also modified the patch slightly to try to fix "of" from processing twice -- but it still did.

I filed a pr (bin/12549) about the broken lpd "-r" switch.
