For a few months, firefox nearly always rendered text in italics. I was often missing bold and "real" italics. Today, I changed the default font from times to Bitstream Vera Serif. It instantly fixed my problem (once it loaded the font which took a few moments.) I also changed from default size from 16 to 13. The dialog is under Edit -> Preferences -> Content -> Fonts & Colors. But still italics don't work.
A couple days this week been working on new libXrender, libXrandr, libXft and libXfixes and new libXcursor with native "XFree86" on NetBSD.
