Different Printings of 1830 Book of Mormon

This article documents the known different printings of the only 1830 edition, first published March 26, 1830, by Egbert B. Grandin in Palmyra, New York. This had 5000 printings. First the known scans available online are listed, followed by a table comparing the known scans for the known differences, then the printing differences are described and many shown. Videos of actual first editions are linked to at the bottom.

Unique Online Scans

LOC1: Library of Congress Copy One
https://www.loc.gov/resource/rbc0001.2015gen34953c1/
Kebler, Leonard, donor. Received 5-10-44. Inside page shows "Chas. S. Albertson. Title page shows handwritten "C.S. Albertson". This is missing the preface sheet of paper (pages III - IV). This includes the testimonies addendum without page numbering. Inside last page (image 606 ) has handwritten "Martin Harris". The scan includes the spine and front and back covers.
This is a bad scan: Scan image 235 is page 231 but the following scan image 232 is page 228 repeated (same damage colorations). This continues with image 237 is page 229, image 238 is page 226, image 239 is page 227, image 240 is page 228 again, image 241 is page 229 again, image 242 is page 230, and image 243 is page 231. Those are all repeats.
LOC2: Library of Congress Copy Two
https://www.loc.gov/resource/rbc0001.2015gen34953c2/
Kebler, Leonard, donor. Received 5-10-44. Inside page shows pasted paper and Library of Congress label. The clerk page shows a faint oval stamp with "CITY OF WA...". This includes the testimonies addendum without page numbering. The final testimony page has handwritten "98.291.193".
Arc1: Archive.org #1 / University of Pittsburgh Library System (2010-02-04) (598 pages including replaced cover)
https://archive.org/details/bookofmormonacco1830smit/page/n3/mode/2up
Also at Wikisource: https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:Book_of_Mormon_(1830,_bookofmormonacco1830smit).pdf
Duplicated at archive.org: https://archive.org/details/book-of-mormon-1830/page/588/mode/2up and https://archive.org/details/book-of-mormon-palmyra-1830-edition/page/n595/mode/2up
Inside cover page has label from UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH and Darlington Memorial Library and "BX8623". Title page shows handwritten "2813.68". Back side of title page (clerk statement page) has handwritten "751" and "BX8623". The pages have significant fold or indentation marks or water damage. Pages 329 through 354 appear to have a small section missing at the top. The cover is replaced with a marbled artwork design cover. This includes the testimonies addendum without page numbering. (Those pages also handwritten have note which includes "L.A. Wright".) The final page has a pasted note about the treatment and rebinding in 1982.
Arc2: Archive.org #2 / SIM Microfilm Canister of IA40414302-02 Raw Scan
https://archive.org/details/per_utah-and-the-mormons_the-book-of-mormon-_joseph-smith-junior_1830/mode/2up and
Shows lots of damage on edges of pages, end of book has significant water stains. This is a scan of a prior scan stored on microfilm. (Maybe the microfilm itself was damaged; see https://archive.org/search?query=canister%3AIA40414302-02 for other books on same microfilm.) This includes the testimonies addendum (both sides). This scan ends with the end of Book of Moroni and testimony of three witnesses repeated multiple times (so its OCR has that repeated multiple times too).
Arc3: Archive.org #3 / McGill University Library
https://archive.org/details/McGillLibrary-rbsc_book-mormon_OCTAVO-6525-22415/mode/2up
Front inside cover says Rev. James Roy in print and handwritten. Cover is taped to title page. The clips holding book open are seen for many pages (for photographs). Bottom of preface page is stamped 386280. Creases and damage can be seen such as on page 5, Book of Nephi. (Note that multiple books have similar creases.) Various handwritten notations and underlining throughout book. Inside backcover shows MCGILL UNIVERSITY LIBRARY with identifiers BZZMO, B641.4, 386280, OCTAVO 6525. End of scan includes handwritten notes included with the book.
JSP: Joseph Smith Papers / Church History Library
https://www.josephsmithpapers.org/paper-summary/book-of-mormon-1830/1 Another copy at https://bookofmormon.online/fax/1830/.
Inside cover multiple pasted newspaper clippings. Inside page (front second flyleaf recto) handwritten "James H. Moyle" and "March 22 1906". For details of this version, see the JSP's source note.
IRR: Institute for Religious Research
https://mit.irr.org/1830-book-of-mormon
This includes the testimonies addendum. This scan has white background and is cropped so doesn't show paper colorations or edges. This scan is missing commas, hyphens, and an entire word at the end of six pages, but I am not listing those six printing differences below until I can understand that these are not due to paper damage that is not shown. With the white background and missing paper imperfections, it appears that faint type is not seen, so may misrepresent what this printed book really had.
WTL: Woodstock Theological Library, Georgetown Univ.
https://repository.digital.georgetown.edu/handle/10822/1049532
Title page has handwritten "BXZ", "8623", and "1830". Includes testimonies addendum.
CHL: Church History Catalog / Uncut Sheets
M222.1 B724 1830 gatherings 1-37
https://catalog.churchofjesuschrist.org/record/e7d19cd9-79d9-4dde-80a6-32e1060dabff/0?view=browse
These sheets were originally owned by the 1830 compositor, John Gilbert, and obtained by Wilford Wood, and later donated to the church.
This 37 uncut sheets of 8 pages per side. Shows some fold marks and some minor damage. This is uncut, untrimmed, ungathered, unbound pages. There are some torn sheets and small missing sections of paper.

Differences in Printings

There are only two clean texts with scans that keep the original content (even if obvious mistakes) as seen in the typesetting: at Joseph Smith Papers and Wikisource. Other OCR scans are available but are full of numerous recognition errors, such as random characters and garbeled words. I provided over 65 fixes combined to JSP and Wikisource for restoring original words and punctuation, and fixing metadata tags. If you know of other clean texts, please let me know so I can compare. (Note that multiple 1830 texts online have wrong content from different editions or purposeful manipulation. They also don't have scanned pages to compare with.)

My assumption is that typos were edited after reading sheets but the original sheets as signatures were still gathered (folded, assembled, cut). This was all part of one printing with type changes being made during the effort causing some books to have slightly different content for the same first 1830 printing.

Later, I was told about a book by Royal Skousen, The Early Transmissions of the Text (2024), with a sections about "The 1830 Palmyra Edition" and "In-Press Changes in the 1830 Edition" I haven't purchased it yet.

In addition after I started finding differences on my own, I learned about Janet Jenson, "Variations between Copies of the First Edition of the Book of Mormon," BYU Studies 13, no. 2 (Winter 1973): 214--22. Of the seventy copies examined, sixty were found to have variants. This article provided several more differences that I also later confirmed in various scans. Interestingly, Jenson's 1973 research did not have the seven differences I found.

I created a database with all my 1830 differences research in YAML and a python script to generate the following table and data.

See "of" how it is adjusted right to "the" and compare with words above "take courage" and word below "to". (Likely the Paharon fix happened at the same time.)

Jenson (1973) said this correction had not yet been discovered. This is confusing as that implies that ~70 copies had this missing. I think is just a type problem and not missing type nor ink specific as I found multiple with faint (e.g. JSP) and clear (e.g. IRR) "e", but didn't find any with a missing type there. The type is slightly tilted with "more" and "over" having different tilts. While a printing has a blob (LOC2) of ink there, if there really was a typesetting fix, then likely would have fixed "Samnel" and "bacause" typos on same page at the same time.

LOC1 and IRR maybe have different typeface for the "7". Notice the missing type has spacing for it. Some of the 7 is missing on top right for LOC1. Likely first typesetting had the "7" and it fell out or broke, and later replaced, so three different versions of this.

Notice the other typo there for "brake". Maybe the typesetter meant to fix "berak" and mistakenly replaced the "bread" to "break" instead. We don't know if there were two changes for same: "bread" to "break" back to "bread", or if it was "bread" to "break", or "break" to "bread" only.

If you know of any other differences in 1830 editions, please let me know.

There are hundreds of errors that were not fixed in all the scans I found, such as the obvious ones: page 212 is numbered as "122" and typo for "GHAPTER XXVI." (instead of "CHAPTER") on page 382. (Not listing the hundreds here.)

By ordering, it appears that JSP and LOC1 contained more older printings, but after that it is unclear. The binding was done at a different location and there were likely various combinations. Later, I may write an article about the sigature gathering work for the printing and folding of the 1830 edition.
